A Shared Step Forward for MEDem: ESFRI Hearings Completed

In February 2026, MEDem participated in the hearings of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), marking an important milestone on our path toward becoming a sustainable European research infrastructure. This moment represents not only a formal step in the ESFRI process but also the result of years of preparation, coordination, and above all, a collective effort.

What is ESFRI and Why Does It Matter?

ESFRI is a strategic and advisory body established by the EU Member States to guide the development of research infrastructures across Europe. Since 2002, it has played a central role in identifying and supporting pan-European infrastructures of strategic importance.

At the heart of this process is the ESFRI Roadmap, a policy document outlining the most promising research infrastructures to be developed in Europe over the next 10 to 20 years. Inclusion on the roadmap brings visibility, recognition, and strategic alignment at the European level. For MEDem, participation in this process is therefore a key step toward becoming a sustainable European research infrastructure.

A Strong and Engaged MEDem Community

Reaching this milestone has been a collective effort.

MEDem is built on collaboration, and the past years have made this more visible than ever. We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary support we have received: more than 1,000 personal endorsements, over 100 institutional endorsements, the engagement of more than 35 MEDem Data Networks, and the dedication of 64 National Coordinators working across multiple countries and disciplines.

This broad backing sends a clear message: There is a strong and shared demand for a sustainable research infrastructure dedicated to Democracy Research.

Moving Forward While We Await the Decision

While we now await the ESFRI decision, our work continues at full speed. We are further developing our MEDem Tools & Services to strengthen our concepts for the next phase. At the same time, we are deepening partnerships within and beyond our community and preparing upcoming events that will create new opportunities for exchange and collaboration. Preparations for the MEDem Conference 2026 are already underway, and we look forward to sharing more details in the near future.

Thank you for your continued trust, your engagement, and your support.
